Understanding the 9 months

July 06, 20262 min read

Think You Have to Use Your Trial Work Period All at Once? Think Again.

One of the biggest myths we hear in the disability community is that the Trial Work Period (TWP) is a relentless countdown clock. Many people believe that the moment you start a job, a 9-month timer begins ticking and runs out no matter what.

That is absolutely NOT how it works. We get it—hearing terms like "rolling 60-month period" sounds like confusing government jargon. Let’s break it down in plain English so you can stop worrying about the calendar and focus on your goals.

The 9-Punch Pass

Think of your 9 Trial Work months less like a ticking clock and more like a 9-punch pass to a movie theater or a coffee shop.

  • You control the punch: You only "use up" one of your 9 months if your gross earnings go over the official threshold. For 2026, that limit is $1,210 a month. If you earn less than that in a month, you don't use a punch.

  • They don’t have to be consecutive: Did you work for 4 months this year and then need to step back for health reasons? No problem. You only used 4 punches. You still have 5 left in your pocket for later.

  • You have plenty of time: You have a full 5 years (60 months) to use up those 9 punches.

Why Does This Matter?

It means you have the freedom and flexibility to test the waters. If you try a new job and it doesn’t work out, or if your health fluctuates, you haven't "failed" or lost your safety net. The system allows you to pause. Your remaining months will be right there waiting for you whenever you are ready to try again.

The Takeaway: Don’t let the fear of complicated government math keep you from earning a paycheck and pursuing your career goals.
