Getting the job that is not yet posted
Stop Waiting for Permission: How to Crack the Hidden Job Market
Does it feel like you’re spending all day refreshing job boards, tweaking your resume, and sending applications into a black hole? We hear you. It’s exhausting, and frankly, it can be pretty discouraging.
But here is a secret that might change how you see the process: It’s not you, it’s the method.
Most people think the only way to find work is to apply to a posted opening. But the data tells a different story. Those alerts from Google, Indeed, and LinkedIn? They only represent about 15% of the job market.
That leaves a massive 85% of jobs that are unadvertised. We call this the "Hidden Job Market."
It sounds mysterious, but it’s actually good news. It means there are thousands of opportunities out there that aren't flooded with hundreds of applicants yet. You just need a different map to find them. As your Career Coaches, we’re here to help you navigate this terrain.
Here is how you can stop waiting for a posting and start creating your own opportunities:
Put on Your Detective Hat
Don't ditch the job boards entirely, but shift your focus. Instead of just applying, use them for research.
Go to the Source: Visit the actual career pages of companies you like.
Watch for Clues: Follow companies on LinkedIn. Are they announcing a new project? Did they just get funding? Is there turnover in a specific department? These are signs that they need help before they even write the job description.
Networking is Your Golden Ticket
We know "networking" can feel like a scary buzzword, especially if you are nervous about disclosing a disability or explaining a gap in employment. But networking is just human connection.
Use LinkedIn: Look for connections who can introduce you to a future boss. A warm introduction is worth a hundred cold emails.
Social Media: Don’t underestimate your Facebook or Twitter friends. You never know who they know.
Be Proactive, Not Reactive
Waiting for a job to be posted puts you in a reactive position. We want you to take control.
Google is Your Ally: Find the department heads at companies you admire.
Reach Out Directly: Send a message showing them what you can do. You don't have to wait for them to ask for help—show them you are the help.
Lean on The A-Team
You don't have to do this alone. At Advocations, we work different.
If you are already working with one of our Career Coaches, give us a shout. We often have the "inside scoop" on inclusive employers who are looking for talent but haven't posted the role yet.
We can help you script those outreach messages so you feel confident, professional, and ready to show off your skills.
You Are Ready for This
The job market can be intimidating, but remember: you have resilience and skills that employers need. Don't limit yourself to the 15% of jobs everyone else is fighting for. Let's go find the 85% that are waiting for you.
