Acing the virtual interview
Screen Presence: How to Crush Your Video Interview
Interviews are nerve-wracking enough. Add a webcam, a lack of handshakes, and the fear of your Wi-Fi cutting out, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
But here is the good news: You’ve got this.
Video interviews are the new normal, and they offer a great opportunity to control your environment. Whether you are navigating a return to work or looking for your next step, mastering the "digital handshake" is a skill you can learn. We’ve broken down the scary stuff into manageable steps so you can show employers the incredible asset you are.
Set the Stage (Control Your Environment)
Think of your background like a minimalist art gallery: clean, neutral, and distraction-free. You want the recruiter focused on you, not your bookshelf.
The Backdrop: Pick a simple wall. Remove clutter that might catch the light or distract the eye.
Lighting: You are the star. Avoid backlighting (sitting in front of a bright window) which turns you into a silhouette. Aim for light that hits your face directly.
Tech Check: Don't let a glitch derail you. Test your mic, camera, and internet connection well before go-time.
Interruption Insurance: Life happens. If a noise occurs or a family member walks in, don't panic. Just be honest and upfront. Transparency is professional.
Dress the Part (Head-to-Toe)
It is tempting to wear pajama bottoms because "they’ll never see them." Don't do it. Dressing exactly as you would for an in-person meeting puts you in the right professional headspace. Even in your living room, you are at work.
Body Language & The "Digital Handshake"
Since you can't offer a firm handshake, you have to use other tools to build connection.
The Eye Contact Trick: Looking at the person on the screen feels natural, but to them, it looks like you’re looking down. Look directly at the camera lens to simulate eye contact.
Posture Power: Sit on the edge of your seat. It keeps your energy up and shows active engagement.
Smile: Start with a warm nod and a smile. It sets a positive tone instantly.
The Conversation (Flow, Don't Force)
A video interview isn't an interrogation; it’s a conversation.
Mind the Lag: Tech lag is real. Pause for a second after the interviewer finishes speaking to ensure you don't accidentally interrupt.
Notes are Okay: One benefit of video? You can have notes! Jot down key points, but use them sparingly. You want to sound like you, not a robot reading a script.
Embrace the Awkward: If you freeze up or the tech glitches, acknowledge it openly. A little transparency ("Sorry, just taking a moment to think!") goes a long way.
